**If you want to get a more in depth review/my opinion on Kanye West and Yeezus, please check out episode 20 of the Failing Funny Podcast. You can also check out a couple reviews I enjoyed reading; this is one from UrbanRhetoric (via @urbanrhetoric ), and this is one from Nerd At The Cool Table (via @NerdAtTheCoolTable)**
I wasn’t going to do a review/thoughts post on Yeezus because there are so many and the album’s been out for awhile, but I guess another one can’t hurt.
Last Tuesday we received Kanye’s newest baby, Yeezus. The Friday before the album leaked (his baby, dubbed North West was born the next day) and Twitter was crazy! Everyone was live-tweeting while they listened and it was an awesome thing to be a part of. I did also show my support by purchasing the album.
My biggest gripe with some of the backlash I read in Yeezus reviews were that they didn’t like the “new” direction West was going in. But, if you follow West and listened to his other albums (808s & MBDTF) you had to know that this was anything but . Yeezus isn’t his best album to date, but it’s not his worst. If you expect to hear old Mr. West, go listen to his old albums. ‘Ye is going to continue to grow, innovate and dabble in different movements/sounds/projects whether we like it or not. So instead of tear him down I think we should praise him for taking risks and trying to grow as an artist and being different. I think Yeezus lived up to the hype and Mr. West will always have a fan in me.
I’m not going to get into lyrics or what each song means because if you google “Yeezus Reviews”, there are people who explain them a lot better than I ever could. But here are the songs I enjoyed (listen to the album in full below): “New Slaves”, “Hold My Liquor”, “I’m In It”, “Blood On The Leaves”, “Send It Up”, and everyone’s favorite “Bound 2″.
When I listen to albums I often wonder what it’s like to be in the room with the artists while they create and when I listened to “Hold My Liquor” I wanted to be a fly on the wall so bad! What do you think Chief Keef and Justin Vernon talked about? What did they bond over? Will they work together in the future? I NEED ANSWERS!!!
So there you have it, my short post on Yeezus. Hopefully my reviews get better as time goes on.
